I’ve got the music in me
Parkinson’s Scrabble word of the day.
DYSARTHRIA: difficulty speaking because the muscles used are either to weak or to difficult to control.
Symptoms: slurred speech, slow speech, monotone speech, uneven volume, uneven or abnormal speech rhythm, nasal raspy or strained voice, rapid speech that is difficult to understand.
There are two perceptions in dealing with this disease called Parkinson’s.
1: ours
2: everyone else’s
Do we sometimes get so caught up in our methods?
That we don’t notice how others ,
not just see us …….
But in how they HEAR US!
Then again, we don’t just want to be heard.
We want to be Understood.
Our Voice is more than a moving mouth,
We should expect more from our voice than just being LOUD!
What you say
Plus
How you say it
Equals
How people will receive it.
Our Voice
What is the purpose of our voice?
Our voice allows us to communicate.
Communicate with who?
How we communicate with others,
is usually dictated by how we talk to ourselves.
Self talk
Is that Inner voice,
That influences our outer voice.
To communicate effectively, you must not only get their attention but maintain it once it has been acquired .
This can normally be achieved if those you are communicating with, feel that they are being
1: educated
2: Inspired
3: entertained
Sounds simple.
And you know what? It probably would be!
If we didn’t have that little pain ,
Called, PARKINSON’S!
So we must add our voice onto the list of things we must now exercise and practice, so we may stay competitive in the competition against Parkinson’s.
It takes Courage to continue to persevere in this competition.
Consider , Courage a muscle!
Weave “Courage “ into your self-talk when you Practice.
So When you talk outwardly, that Courage, is now on display !
Prepare a self assessment checklist.
Make This checklist YOURS!
Preparing a checklist not only continues the education process of Your Parkinson’s but will also make sure nothing has been forgotten or omitted in your daily routine.
Examples
Tongue placement in mouth
Mouth Dryness
Tremors-Jaws,Lips, Tongue
Posture
Breathing
Swallowing
Hearing(Ear wax build up)
Level of Anxiety and Stress
Diet
Vision ( initializing and maintaining eye contact)
Balance ( ear, eye, relationship)
Video tape( see your Visual & Vocal image)
Using your self assessment check list, try and insert them in your everyday activities.
When you talk try to;
1:Pace of speech
2:Volume to speech.
3:Speak with a melody
4:Speak with emotion
(Happy, Sad, Disgust, Fearful, Angry , Surprise )
5: Body language
try to use your hands and arms into your message. Keep them on their own side of the body, this will make you appear bigger and more confident. Ergo Louder
try not to clasp your hands together or behind your back. This makes you appear smaller and meeker.
Try ending on a low pitch. This sounds more definite and in charge.
Where ending on a high pitch, signals that you are unsure and less confident.
6;Pause (give them time to engage physically and orally)
Leave them feeling confident,
Use “ Yes and”
As opposed to “ Yes but”
Ex, they say Something like
“ That was a good meeting “
You reply “ Yes and tomorrow will be better.”
This agrees with the statement and signals better to come.
A positive message!
As opposed to
“ Yes but tomorrow will be better.”
That “but” leaves one to believe the day could have been better.
Leaves a more negative image.
Being Positive provides one with better posture and stronger body image.
When you leave a room you will exit by walking through a door frame. As you continue through and enter a new room.
You are making a new impression to those already in that room.
That impression is how they will Perceive you to be.
Have fun and be a warrior
