One of the toughest parts of trying to be in control of your Parkinson’s diagnosis is the fact that most of the learning experiences are “ON THE JOB!”

By “on the job” I mean that most of the time Parkies have to learn through experience and usually that experience is gained the hard way!

To better live and move forward with a Parkinson’s diagnosis the Parkie must have the ability to self analyze.

It is important that the Parkie knows what their weaknesses and strengths are.

When identifying their strengths and weaknesses it is imperative that more strengths be recognized than weaknesses.

The Parkie who only focuses on the negative is usually in the wrong frame of Mimd for Improvement and will put too much pressure on themselves, thus stunting their development .

So when self analyzing use the sandwich approach.

Write down 3 or 4 positives

Next write 2-3 to work on

Finish with 3 or 4 , positives!

As the disease progresses theParkie must adapt.

The best way is to be

Constantly doing a self analysis ,

But the big question is…….

WHAT SHOULD WE SELF ANALYZE?

Self Analysis can usually fit under three common categories :

1: TECHNICAL

this is usually the easiest category to analyze. Basically the overall Physical elements.

Vision, movement, etc.

2; TACTICAL

requires the Parkie to recognize and understand situations that their Parkinson’s will place them in.

Tactical requires a mix of technical and mental .

Tactical usually involves how they perform in certain situations,

Tactical is a recognition of patterns and situations and what the best approach is to combat that situation.

3: MENTAL

is probably the toughest of the three. It takes into account many different variables.

Things like their own happiness, work ethic, motivation, self talk, habits, etc.

This can be hard as sometimes the truth hurts.

Often the ability to be honest with oneself can make all the difference.

HOW TO IMPROVE SELF ANALYSIS SKILLS

A: VIDEO

Watching oneself on video makes it easier to assess technical, tactical and some body language skills. This can boost confidence or identify areas for improvement.

No matter the situation Video gives the quickest and easiest information that you may use for self analysis .

B: OUTSIDE FEEDBACK

It can be a benefit to know how others see how Parkinson’s is affecting you.

Whether that person is informed or not about the disease.

If the Outside feedback seems uninformed the Parkie can use their own self analysis skills to decide how much of the feedback to take in.

Take care in how much outside feedback to ask for. It will more often than not be negative. To much negative feedback can be detrimental to our confidence.

C: ASK QUESTIONS

One of the keys to any self improvement is to ask honest questions about your preparation and performance .

Parkies must be honest with themselves.

Ask questions,

Examples

Who do I admire that has Parkinson’s and Why?

Have I made the appropriate sacrifices?

Have I been eating and exercising properly?

Am I consistent with my mental preparation?

Do I handle distractions and obstacles well?

CONCLUSION

It is important that we are able to analyze ourselves.

Self analysis ensures that proper focus is maintained and the drive needed to live with Parkinson’s is always present.

Living a life with Parkinson’s is often learned through experience and self analysis can be a key to ensuring that any mistakes are learned from, in the best ways possible.
